The Academy teaches the Mathematics Standard 11–12 Syllabus (2024), which was implemented for Year 11 from 2026 and is examined for the first time in the 2027 HSC. This is the current syllabus for the Year 11 2027 cohort.

Course description

Mathematics Standard enables students to use mathematics effectively, efficiently and critically to make informed decisions in daily life. All Year 11 students share a common Mathematics Standard course. In Year 12, ATAR-pathway students study Mathematics Standard 2, which develops mathematical knowledge through applications and modelling and can contribute to the ATAR.

  • Networks: Network Concepts; Critical Path Analysis

Students who should consider this course

This course suits students who want to extend their mathematical skills beyond Stage 5 through real-world applications, without the in-depth calculus focus of Mathematics Advanced.

HSC examination

The HSC examination consists of a written paper worth 100 marks. NESA-approved calculators may be used. One school-based assessment task in both Year 11 and Year 12 must be an assignment or investigation-style task.

Your 2027–2028 pathway

  • Year 11 (2027): Mathematics Standard — 2 units, 120 indicative hours. All students complete this common course first.
  • Year 12 (2028), choose one: Mathematics Standard 1 — 2 units, applications and modelling; or Mathematics Standard 2 — 2 units, more complex content.
  • Year 11 Mathematics Standard is the prerequisite for both. ATAR Pathway students study Mathematics Standard 2 in Year 12.

  • Measurement: right-angled triangles; ratios and rates.
  • Statistics: bivariate data analysis; relative frequency and probability.
  • Designed to build confidence and prepare students for post-school employment or further training.

Year 12 Mathematics Standard 2 — course structure

  • Extending mathematical thinking through more complex content.
  • Algebra: algebraic relationships.
  • Financial Mathematics: investment and loans; annuities.
  • Measurement: trigonometry; ratios and rates.
  • Networks: network flow; critical path analysis.
  • Statistics: bivariate data analysis; relative frequency and probability; the normal distribution.

Standard 1 or Standard 2?

  • Standard 1 — practical, meaningful applications; builds mathematical confidence; focus on applications and modelling; supports employment and further training; an optional HSC examination pathway is available.
  • Standard 2 — more complex mathematical content; greater depth in applications and modelling; includes Networks and the Normal Distribution; supports a wider range of educational and employment aspirations; an HSC examination course.
  • Think about your strengths, goals and preferred level of challenge.

Mathematics Standard 1 — understanding the ATAR pathway

  • Students on an ATAR Pathway who take Standard 1 must complete the optional HSC examination, enrolling additionally in Mathematics Standard 1 (Examination).
  • The examination result may be eligible to contribute to the ATAR, subject to UAC ATAR rules and the student’s overall pattern of study.
  • Students considering university should check current course prerequisites and UAC requirements.
  • Key message: Standard 1 is not automatically a ‘non-ATAR course’ — the ATAR outcome depends on whether the optional HSC examination is taken and the student’s overall ATAR-eligible pattern of study.

HSC assessment — an important difference

  • Standard 1: school-based assessment leads to an HSC grade. Students undertaking the optional HSC examination must also enrol in Mathematics Standard 1 (Examination).
  • Standard 2: students complete school-based assessment and sit the external HSC examination. Performance is reported using HSC Performance Bands 1–6.
  • Your school will provide the final assessment schedule and task details for your cohort.

Year 12 Mathematics Standard 2 — course components and assessment

  • School-based assessment: Knowledge and understanding 50%; Skills in working mathematically 50%.
  • Assessment focuses on Year 12 outcomes; Year 11 Mathematics Standard is assumed knowledge.
  • Standard 2 has HSC Performance Band Descriptions — Bands 1–6 describe overall HSC achievement; higher bands reflect stronger reasoning, modelling, problem-solving and communication.

What does the 50/50 weighting mean?

  • 50% Knowledge and understanding — understanding mathematical concepts and relationships; selecting and applying appropriate techniques; applying course knowledge in mathematical contexts.
  • 50% Working mathematically — communicating mathematical thinking and reasoning; choosing and applying techniques to solve problems; making connections and developing fluency; using mathematical models and appropriate representations.

  • Year 11: common Mathematics Standard course; school-based assessment contributes to the Year 11 grade.
  • Year 12 Standard 1: school-based assessment measures achievement against the Standard 1 outcomes and content.
  • Balanced assessment: Knowledge and understanding and Working mathematically carry equal weighting — 50% each.
  • School program: the school determines individual task types and weightings within NESA requirements.
